Windows 2.1 launched just six months after the release of 2.0 in two variants, Windows/286 for Intel 286 processors and below and Windows/386 for Intel 386 processors. The courts ultimately ruled in Microsoft’s favor for all but a few claims. With Windows 1.0, Microsoft had licensed parts of the GUI from Apple, but Apple believed they went too far with 2.0. It was that first feature, overlapping windows and other extended desktop metaphors, that would draw the ire of Apple, when they started their “look and feel” lawsuit, Apple Computer, Inc. It introduced new features, such as the ability to overlap windows, 16 color VGA support, and support for EMS extended memory. ![]() Windows 2.0 followed the release of Windows 1.0 by three years, launching in December of 1987.
